What is a Mojito?

The Mojito is a Cuban cocktail, prepared with rum, lemon, mint, some prefer to use mint or eucalyptus, sugar and mineral water.

History of the Mojitos

At the end of the 16th century, a famous corsair Sir Richard Drake, a subordinate of Captain Sir Francis Drake (corsair of the English crown) prepared the first version of what we know today as a mojito, this was a drink that contained brandy (raw rum, without age), of low quality, sugar, lime, mint and other herbs, thus the cocktail called Draque was created.

It was said that its use was somewhat medicinal, the brandy provided heat, the water had the function of diluting the alcohol, the lemon helped to combat scurvy, which was a disease suffered by many sailors, since they spent a lot of time at sea, and they didn’t eat fresh fruit, so their vitamin C went down a lot, the mint and herbs served to give it a fresh flavor, and the sugar made the mixture richer.

In the 1860s, rum production was more refined, already aged, to give a much better quality rum. This rum replaced the aguardiente, and the draquecito changed its name to Mojito, which was in the La Bodeguita del Medio restaurant where it began to be sold under the name of mojito and made famous by Ernest Hemingway since he drank it every day.

Peppermint as we know it today, arises from the natural cross between different types of mint, and having a better aroma, they prefer it for this cocktail. Ice, as in many other cocktails, has a hidden use, not only to refresh.

In La Bodeguita del Medio, they used whole ice or in stones, this is in the 1930s, over the years, crushed ice began to be used, since it served as a filter, so that the leaves would stay at the bottom and not bother when having a drink. Although many like to chew the mint leaves.

Ingredients for the Mojito

  • 60 ml of Rum we like to use BACARDÍ Blanco (carte blanche).
  • 25 ml of Lemon Juice.
  • 12 Peppermint Leaves.
  • 2 Tablespoons of Sugar or Brown Sugar.
  • 60 ml of Mineral Water.

Preparation

  • Add sugar, lemon juice and mint leaves to a tall glass.
  • We crush the mint leaves, together with the lemon, and the sugar, just gently in order to extract their essential oils and aromatize.
  • Fill the glass with ice. We add the rum of your choice, but make sure it is white rum, not aged because it changes the flavor a lot, and it does not allow the mint and lemon to have the same presence.
  • Of course, if you want to experiment you can use another rum but it will no longer be the classic flavor.
  • Fill the glass with mineral water. We stir a little and decorate with a straw or stirrer, a slice of lemon and a sprig of mint.
